Die meisten haben die schöne Vorstellung, ein Designer würde in einem großen Raum am Tisch sitzen und zeichnen, sich auf den Laufstegen dieser Welt bejubeln lassen, in Paris, Mailand oder New York in den angesagten Restaurants abhängen oder auf St. Barth chillen. Die Realität sieht ein wenig anders aus, Fashion ist zwar eines der schönsten Dinge, die man auf dieser Welt tun kann, aber es ist auch gleichzeitig einer der härtesten Jobs. Der erste und der letzte Gedanke des Tages gehören der Kreation, der Produktion, dem Vertrieb, dem Tagesablauf, den Kosten, den Einnahmen … Wie sagte einer mal so schön: „Retail is Detail“ und das beginnt mit der ersten Idee für eine Kollektion und endet nie. Wer möchte, kann sich gern einmal für ein Praktikum bei Roma e Toska bewerben und für all jene, die es als „Entzauberung“ empfinden, stehen 1000 andere Berufe bereit. Aber für die wenigen, die sich nicht abhalten lassen, öffnet sich ein harter faszinierender, aufregender und fordernd-grausig-schöner Weg. Heute ist Sonntag, 6.30 Uhr und ich sitze am Schreibtisch, um die nächste Woche vorzubereiten. Montag wird ein hektischer Tag im Atelier mit neuen Modellen für den Sommer 2016, die in die Fertigung gehen sollen. Die ausgewählten Stoffe für den Herbst-Winter 2016-17 müssen in Auftrag gegeben werden; einen Text für eine Zeitung schreiben, Fotos auswählen, einen Anstellungsvertrag überprüfen. Anschließend wartet eine neue Logistikerin für den Online Shop, das Telefon klingelt, meine Tochter bereitet die abendliche Geburtstagsparty für die Freundin vor, der Hund will raus …
What Remains of the Day
Most people have a very romantic idea of the work of a designer: sitting in a beautiful loft drawing sketches for the new collection, sending kisses from the runways of the world, hanging around in fancy restaurants in Paris, Milan or New York or enjoying the sun and drinks of St. Barth. The reality is quite different. Fashion is one of the most beautiful things to do, but it is one of the toughest business as well. The first and the last thoughts of the day belong to the creation, production, distribution, logistics, financing … As someone once told me: Retail is detail! And this starts from the early idea of a collection and will never end. If you would like to apply for an internship at Roma e Toska and for all those who discovered the backstage business as disillusioning there are thousands of other jobs to find. But the few who want to continue will expect a tough, fascinating, exciting, thrilling and awfully beautiful future. Today is Sunday, 6.30 am and I am sitting at the desk preparing the upcoming week. Tomorrow will be as hectic as always: The new models for Summer 2016 have to be decided for the production. The material for the fall-winter 2016-17 has to be selected and ordered; an article for a newspaper, some photos, a job request. Afterwards an appointment with a logistic online supplier, the telephone is ringing constantly, my daughter is preparing a birthday party for her friend, the dog wants to go for a walk…
